Information about dimming

 

General

.

The dimmable LED lights have a “D” in the last position in the model name. For this purpose, the LED luminaire has an LED driver (constant current source) with integrated dimming function, which can be addressed via a control line. In addition to the assembly and installation instructions, we have summarised further explanations on the dimming of the luminaires here. Please also be sure to read the mounting and installation instructions, which are included with the luminaire or can be downloaded from our website.

 


Safety Instructions

■ August Müller Lichttechnik AG accepts no liability for damage or consequential damage caused by failure to observe these instructions or by improper assembly, installation and or handling of the luminaire.
■ Disconnect the power supply before carrying out any work on the luminaire.
■ Installation of this luminaire involves work on the mains voltage; it must therefore be carried out professionally in accordance with the country-specific installation regulations and connection conditions.
■ Do not look into the luminaire from a short distance or for a longer period (> 5 min.). This may cause retinal damage.


Selecting the dimming method

The brightness of the light can be controlled by a 1 – 10 V DC control voltage, a 10V PWM signal (pulse width modulation) or by resistor on the control line. We recommend using the 1 – 10 V DC control voltage as this is a very well established dimming method and a large number of accessories are commercially available.

Connection

Depending on the model, the control line consists of a separate 2-core cable or the 2-core control line is routed out of the luminaire in parallel with the 3-core mains supply line in a 5-core cable. For more information, please refer to the respective mounting and installation instructions.

It is essential to observe the correct polarity of the control line. First check the function of the dimming for a short moment. If dimming is not possible, immediately disconnect the luminaire from the power supply and check or replace the polarity.

IMPORTANT! Never apply mains voltage to the control line. This will lead to a defect of the luminaire or the LED driver.

■ The control line must be connected to the fixed sheathed cable in a fixed junction box (e.g. on the roof beams).
■ For an extension of the control line, we recommend insulated butt connectors (e.g. Klauke Art. 680) with a sheathing of the connection point with heat shrink tubing or a plug connection (e.g. Wieland Gesis RST 20i3).
■ Only if dimming is desired, remove an existing protective cap from the control line or remove the insulation of the cable ends. A short circuit on the control line will cause the luminaire to dim.

Dimming Switch for 1-10V DC Control Voltage

We recommend the use of the 1 – 10 V DC control voltage in conjunction with the following dimmer switches for dimming the luminaire, with which both dimming and switching of the luminaire is possible.

■ The manufacturer’s specifications for switching capacity and power at the control output of the dimmer switch must be observed.
■ If required, the switching capacity can be increased by an additional power switch.
■ The power consumption of the control line is 0.1 mA per luminaire of all series (except PA).
■ Considering the aforementioned power values, a corresponding number of luminaires can be connected parallel to one dimmer switch. For long distances, line resistances can lead to different dimming

With these control units you can dim and switch one or more of our lights in up to 4 circuits via a KNX bus. In addition, manual switching is possible per circuit.

The KNX bus is a worldwide standard for building automation or smart home and allows for example the integration of sensors.

With this interface module you can dim and switch one or more of our luminaires via a DALI interface.

This control unit allows you to dim and switch one or more of our luminaires in conjunction with the RS485 bus.

The manufacturer Eltako offers a variety of communication interfaces to the RS485 bus, actuatorsand sensors for building automation.

Connection with Homematic

This control unit allows you to dim and switch one or more of our lights in conjunction with the Homematic building automation system.

This control unit allows you to dim and switch one or more of our luminaires in conjunction with the RS485 bus.

The manufacturer Eltako offers a variety of communication interfaces to the RS485 bus, actuatorsand sensors for building automation.
