IP Classification - IP54, IP65, and other protection classes

IP Classification Guide

The Protection class specifies the suitability of luminaires for various ambient conditions, hence the protection of active parts against contact, ingress of foreign bodies and water as well as impact resistance (so-called housing protection). Protection classes are IP00 to IP69K, the abbreviation IP stands for International Protection.

In the product description for our LED luminaires the IP protection class / IP classification is always indicated.

The IP protection class consists of two digits (for example IP40 or IP65). The first digit refers to the protection against Solids and protection against contact, the second on protection against the ingress of moisture.

Here you will find the classification in detail:

  • IP0X Neither touch protection nor protection against foreign bodies
  • IP1X Back of hand protection, protection against foreign bodies with diameter >50mm
  • IP2X Keep fingers away Protection against foreign bodies >12mm diameter
  • IP3X Protection against contact with tools (test specimen: 12mm diameter, 100mm long) Protection against foreign bodies with diameter >2.5mm
  • IP4X Keeping away from tools etc. Protection against foreign bodies >1mm diameter
  • IP5X Full touch protection, protection against harmful dust deposits inside
  • IP6X Full touch protection, protection against dust ingress

Indicators for water protection
